Yep. That's me.

I have seriously neglected this blog. *hanging head in shame*

Life has taken me away but now I have returned. *outstretched arms*

Ok, enough theatrics :)

In all honesty you haven't missed much. My days have been thus... get up, take kids to school, stop toddler from destroying everything in sight (failing most of the time), keep up with household chores (failing miserably in the laundry dept.), pick-up kids from school, make dinner, go to work(night/graveyard shift), repeat...repeat....repeat.
I'm just trying to keep my head above water at this point.

Upcoming events in May:
School will be out in a few weeks and Kaitlin has a birthday this month. We'll enjoy a few days staying in a cabin at Mahoney State Park and doing recreational activities.

I just took the middle school tour with Braden this evening. He's very excited about being in an older school. I'm excited for a new chapter in his life.

I have fond memories of my middle school years which I spent in the Netherlands. At the time my parents we're in the Royal Air Force and we had been posted there for four years. I visited many different countries and cultures, learned to speak dutch, german and french, my classmates we're from 10 different nations, just to name a few experiences. You might say it was a unique and life changing time for me. I remain friends with all of my classmates to this day (20 years later), we have a bond that few people share.
*What a fantastic idea: Create an international school where children learn and grow by sharing and celebrating their differences. I can still sing the Japanese New Year song, word for word :)

When Kaitlin studied Anne Frank this year in school, I proudly told her that I have been inside the attic hideout. It was during a school field trip to Amsterdam after spending weeks learning about Anne and the persecution of the Jews.

Blizzard

We've had a mild winter so far but I knew it had to end at some point. We received about a foot of snow and when the blizzard hit, it blew the snow everywhere. Some drifts we're as tall as the kids while others were waist high or knee deep. The kids enjoyed 3 days of no school.

Kaitlin was the driveway shoveling guru, she totally rocked :-D

Braden had fun diving over snow ditches with his guns, it was like a training exercise.

I think it's cool how the snow stayed put when the door was opened.

Looks like a white sand dune. I don't think Braden's feet are on the bottom of this one.

It was actually really cool to see the wind. Usally a person can hear and feel wind but the snow followed every twist and turn. Sometimes we even watched the snow take the form of a tornado as it whipped between the houses.

We found ourselves house bound but it was really nice for us to spend time together which has been a rare opportunity since I've started working nights. We enjoyed snuggling on the couch, all five of us squished together watching movies and eating popcorn.

Movie Review 19

Zed, a prehistoric would-be hunter, eats from a tree of forbidden fruit and is banished from his tribe, accompanied by Oh, a shy gatherer. On their travels, they meet biblical characters and reach the city of Sodom where their tribe is now enslaved. Zed and Oh are determined to rescue the women they love, Maya and Eema. Can an inept hunter and a smart but slender and diffident gatherer become heroes and make a difference?

An absolute waste of time, with offensive material intended to be funny. Written, directed and produced by Harold Ramis (egon in Ghostbusters) is tongue in cheek and slightly strange, bringing to mind the creations of Mel Brooks.

On his latest expedition, Dr. Rick Marshall is sucked into a space-time vortex alongside his research assistant and a redneck survivalist. In this alternate universe, the trio make friends with a primate named Chaka, their only ally in a world full of dinosaurs and other fantastic creatures.

Typical Will Farrell film, this story was funny in parts but not as good as i had expected. Be prepared for silliness.

Wheelchair-bound WW2 bomber pilot Toby Jugg has a series of waking nightmares while recuperating in a remote Welsh mansion under the eye of sinister doctor Hal Burns. Jugg begins to suffer hallucinations, during which shadowy figures and crawling insects plague his mind. Are these brought on by the guilt of his destructive bombing raids over Dresden, or the strange behavior of Dr Burns which serves to increase his paranoia?

BBC produced psycological thriller. A creepy and strange story to be sure, adapted from the book 'the haunting of Toby Jugg'. The acting was good but definately had a creepy feel and the ending was unsatifying.

Movie Review 18

Connor Mead, a successful fashion photographer, goes to his younger brother's wedding to convince him not to marry. He arrives at his dead uncle's estate during the rehearsal the night before the wedding; he starts in, taking his brother aside, trashing marriage. Later in the men's room, his uncle, who taught Connor all he knows about women, appears to him and tells Connor that three ghosts will visit him that night: the ghosts of girlfriends past, present, and future. Can he learn anything from his life and fix what he's broken?

In typical Matthew fashion, this movie covers all the aspects of a romantic comedy. Nice story, a good watch.

Mike works at his parents' motel, he's sweet, but hapless, with no ambition. Sue sells art for a Baltimore firm, she's enigmatic - rarely smiling but occasionally impulsive, feeling the clock tick after a breakup with a boyfriend who could have provided security. Mike takes one look at her and determines to connect. Is there any way he stands a chance with her? What can he offer?

Steve Zahn is a good comedic actor and also has the ability to show geniune feelings through out his performance. I was really pulling for his character in this sweet and vulnerable story of two people trying to find something special. Worth every penny.

When high-powered book editor Margaret faces deportation to her native Canada, the quick-thinking exec declares that she's actually engaged to her unsuspecting put-upon assistant Andrew, who she's tormented for years. He agrees to participate in the charade, but with a few conditions of his own. The unlikely couple heads to Alaska to meet his quirky family and the always-in-control city girl finds herself in one comedic fish-out-of-water situation after another.

A perfect match of comedy and love. Sandra Bullock has such talent when using her body to create laughter. Another good romantic comedy that didn't disappoint.

When a meteorite from outer space hits a young California woman named Susan Murphy and turns her into a giant monster, she is taken to a secret government compound where she meets a ragtag group of monsters also rounded up over the years. As a last resort, under the guidance of General W.R. Monger, on a desperate order from The President, the motley crew of Monsters is called into action to combat the aliens and save the world from imminent destruction!

kids enjoyed it but dare I say it?...a bit boring for the adults.

Sid begins to wish for a family of his own, and so steals some dinosaur eggs which leads to Sid ending up in a strange underground world where his herd must rescue him, while dodging dinosaurs and facing danger left and right, and meeting up with a one-eyed weasel known as Buck who hunts dinosaurs intently.

I love the Ice Age movies so naturally this one was great for me. Kids found it really fun too.

For generations, the people of the City of Ember have languished in a world of artificial lights. But Ember's once powerful generator is failing ... and the great lamps that illuminate the city are starting to flicker. Now, two teenagers in a race against time, must search Ember for clues that will unlock the ancient mystery of the city's existence, and help the citizens escape before the lights go out forever.

Adapted from the book City of Ember. My family liked this movie, it keep the kids attention and was entertaining enough for the adults. The story was very original and at no time did my attention get pulled out of the movie.

Braden completed his last year of cub scouts and has earned the highest badge, the arrow of Light. We are so proud of him and all his hard work. The leaders were awesome and played a vital role in helping him achieve his goals...thank you to Bro. Tyron and Bro. Howard for your help this year :D

We attended a ceremony for Bradens "crossing over" to boy scouts and snapped a few fuzzy pictures (darn camera).

Beside You ~ Marianas Trench

Completely by accident, I came across an awesome song and found myself singing along within seconds. I don't know much about Marianas Trench yet except that they are Canadian. Their sophomore album entitled Masterpiece Theatre which was released on February 24th 2009 has hit gold in Canada.

E-4B sighting

After pulling up on our driveway we watched the E-4B fly over us. It was so low that we could see in the windows! It's landing gear was still up so I'm not sure why they were flying so low. I wish I had my camera handy but found this photo taken on Offutt AFB, it's the exact view we had. We've seen it many times before but never this close. Pretty cool huh?
The E-4B serves as the National Airborne Operations Center for the president, secretary of defense and the Joint Chiefs of Staff. If needed, the E-4B can provide a command, control and communications center to direct U.S. forces, execute emergency war orders and coordinate actions by civil authorities.
The 55th Wing aircraft was called on to lend a helping hand to the presidential transport aircraft, Air Force One, after it encountered some maintenance issues. The E-4B is a modified Boeing 747 whose mission is to provide support to the national leadership of the United States.

Offutt Airshow

The atmosphere was charged with energy while we felt the powerful jet engines rubble through our bodies as they screamed past us. So low to the ground at times we thought they might crash, only to level off at the last possible second.

This jet was incredible! It can fly stright up 3 miles high in less that 20 seconds!
Starting the 3 mile climb.

Just coming out of a barrel roll manuver. Look at the heat from the burners...wow!

I got this picture as the plane moved past us to line up on the airstrip. This guy looked like Tim Roth to me. What do you think? (you can click on any picture and it should show a larger image).

I got chills with this one. Check out the thumbs up in the fore and background.

What's an airshow without a visit from the Army? Braden was in seventh heaven. He just about hyperventilated when he got to look through a REAL gun...livin' the dream ;)

I liked how casually these pilots where talking and hanging out on their plane. Thanks for the great pose boys.

Army para-troopers demonstrated their amazing freefalls into enemy territory.

It was breathtaking to watch them falling sooo quickly, about 90 mph to be exact. It always looks so graceful whenever I see video of the skydiver's perspective.

Dozes of aircraft lined the blacktop for people to walk around and sometimes walk through. There were all manner of sizes from 2 man planes the size of a car to giant conmunication and cargo planes, which stood about 5 stories tall.

The weather was perfect and we truly had a blast. Speaking of blasts...as we walked back to the van the road was blocked off and it appeared as though a squad was checking out the underside of a vehicle. It looked serious enough as the fire department and military police came. We didn't find out if there was a problem.

The Blue Angels were the last to perform which we watched from our van, Mike didn't want to get stuck in a long line leaving the base gates. We still got a great view but I would've prefered to be close enough to feel the engines as the buzzed the crouds at the airstrip.

First Day of School

It's that time again. The start of cooler weather, college football and of course...back to school.

It's the end of "Mom, I'm bored what can I do?" and the beginning of "I hate homework!"

Braden's in his last year of elementary school, 5th grade. Next year i'll have the fun of waiting in two school pick-up lines. *yippee*

Kaitlin's starting 3rd grade in which she has her first male teacher. She's excited because apparently he gives out treats and lets them sit on their desks. *sigh*

They're growing soo fast.

Movie Review 16

Julia Child and Julie Powell - both of whom wrote memoirs - find their lives intertwined. Though separated by time and space, both women are at loose ends... until they discover that with the right combination of passion, fearlessness and butter, anything is possible.

total chick flick :) Watched this one in the theater and enjoyed it very much. Meryl Streep is amazing as Julia Child.

In the fall of 1959, for a time capsule, students draw pictures of life as they imagine it will be in 50 years. Lucinda, an odd child who hears voices, swiftly writes a long string of numbers. In 2009, the capsule is opened; student Caleb Koestler gets Lucinda's "drawing" and his father John, an astrophysicist, takes a look. He discovers dates of disasters over the past 50 years and three dates remain, all coming soon. He fears for his son, who's started to hear voices and who is visited by a silent stranger who shows him a vision of fire and destruction.

Very good, two thumbs up. Interesting conclusion which had me pondering this movie.

Decepticon forces return to Earth on a mission to take Sam Witwicky prisoner, after the young hero learns the truth about the ancient origins of the Transformers. Joining the mission to protect humankind is Optimus Prime, who forms an alliance with international armies for a second epic battle.

I watched this at the movie theater. It did not disappoint, action and CGI were amazing, sprinkled with humor.

However, I was disappointed in the amount of sexual content. I understand the demographic for Transformers are adult men and women who grew up with the cartoons and toys, unfortunately their kids (mine included) also love it. Anyway, my point is watch the movie before your kids, you might not want them to see it.

Movie Review 15

Detective Danny Fisher discovers his girlfriend has been kidnapped by a ex-con tied to Fisher's past, and he'll have to successfully complete 12 challenges in order to secure her safe release.

I thought this one was ok, as cop action movies go. Nothing noteworthy to report but it was entertaining.

A story of an isolated Alaskan town that is plunged into darkness for a month each year when the sun sinks below the horizon. As the last rays of light fade, the town is attacked by a bloodthirsty gang of vampires bent on an uninterrupted orgy of destruction. Only the small town's husband-and-wife Sheriff team stand between the survivors and certain destruction.

I only watched this movie because of interest in the director, David Slade, who is filming Eclipse (the third installment of the twillight saga). I wanted to see his interpretation of vampires. The movie was full of gore but the story was good. Just wondering how David plans on making a PG vampire movie, I bet it'll be good.

A group of young American ex-pats with telekinetic and clairvoyant abilities are hiding from a clandestine U.S. government agency. They must utilize their different talents and band together for a final job enabling them to escape the agency forever.

This was quite good. I enjoyed the action and CGI.

Focus on the details to follow the plot.

Locks of Love

My hair grows at a snail's pace. I've been letting it grow out for over 2 years, yes you heard it right, 2 years of slow growth. After delivering my third baby I experienced some thining of my hair line and bacame very worried and selfconsious. I'm pleased to report that my hair has fully recovered but I have not forgotten the feeling of helplessness that my hair might never grow back.
I thought alot about girls and women who've lost all their hair and how unfeminine they must feel. I'd heard of girls donating hair to others who have lost their own and decided that I would do it too. Afterall it will just get swept up and thrown in the garbage. For someone who is without hair and watching it being discarded can only feel like a homeless person watching a restaurant throw out food - a waste.
I know, I know, don't be so melodramatic Karen. It just feels good to know that I will help put a smile on a child's face or give someone their confidence.

An IRS agent with a fateful secret embarks on an extraordinary journey of redemption by forever changing the lives of seven strangers.

One of the best movies I've seen...ever. This one had me crying so much I had stuff running from my nose!!!

Enough said :)

There are heroes… there are superheroes… and then there’s Hancock (Will Smith). With great power comes great responsibility – everyone knows that – everyone, that is, but Hancock. Edgy, conflicted, sarcastic, and misunderstood, Hancock’s well-intentioned heroics might get the job done and save countless lives, but always seem to leave jaw-dropping damage in their wake.

This movie had alot of mixed reviews so it took me a long time to finally get interested enough to watch..mostly because we'd run out of new releases. Not at all what I expected...better, a very nice story.

Based on actual events, a plot to assassinate Hitler is unfurled during the height of WWII.

I have actually seen a documentary on this true story and I think the Mythbusters did an episode to prove that Hitler's injuries were reported acurate.

Quite an enthralling movie, even though I already knew the ending, I was on the edge of my seat.

Jewish brothers in Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe escape into the Belarussian forests, where they join Russian resistance fighters and endeavor to build a village in order to protect themselves and about 1,000 Jewish non-combatants.

Saved the best for last...

Would you rather rip out your brain stem, walk across the nearest 4 way highway and skip rope with it than see one more machine gun, explosion riddled war movie?
Well let me educate you my dear friends,don't pass by this gem. It tells a completely different story about the jews, one which I had never heard of before in my WWII studies...one of dignity, empowerment, self-sacrifice, love and of course...danger.
Oh there are many fantastic stories of courage and faith like Anne Frank and the movie "The Pianist" just to name a couple... and this true story can be added to that list.

100% movie magic. the acting...stellar, the cinematography...incredible and the acuracy...impecable. I was blown away by this production and to see the actual people was inspiring. If you make extra time to watch the special features...you won't regret it.

Scouts ~ Aquanaut Badge

Braden's webelos den have been working hard all month earning their aquanaut badges. They went to a pool and worked through the swimming requirements and for the grand finale they went to the lake to paddled a canoe.

Looks like they're about to do battle like Jedi Knights or Gladiators :)

Potty Training 101

Ok so as a rule I don't even attempt to get my kids out of daipers until they turn 3. Kaeleigh is a couple weeks shy of her 2nd birthday.

I couldn't take it anymore I tell ya!!!!

I've had a hard time keeping a daiper on her for quite sometime and have even resorted to using duct tape. No matter how many times I wrap the tape around her waist, she still gets it unpicked. Every morning I find her daiper off and the crib soiled...nap time is the same. I'm so tired of cleaning her bed and sheets everyday...aaarrggg!!!

So I decided to get started with potty training. I'm not expecting a miracle but hopefully we can make some progress.

Potty supplies: 1 singing potty, 1 potty book w/sounds, 1 pack of pull-ups, 1 pack of big girl pants.

Whoops!!! Bottom shot (sorry,couldn't resist).

Success...she used the potty first time out...YEAH!!! It's so cute b/c it only sings when there's a "deposit".

Froggy needed to have a turn too. Luckily she hadn't gone in it yet ;)

8th Birthday ~ part 2

The most important thing Kaitlin wanted for her birthday was to get her ears pierced. She'd been waiting all year for this day so without further ado, here's how it went down...

She did very well...no tears spilled, just a little jump each time the earings were inserted.

Showing off her new flower studs. Kaitlin was soooo happy.

We were told that Kaitlin wasn't the first red head with freckles to get her ears pierced that morning. Another girl came in just before us, she was also celebrating her 8th birthday.

Hmmm, what are the odds of that?!

The next day Kaitlin was showing her friends at church. Low and behold, one of them, who's 8th birthday was 2 days before had gone to the same place on the same day and gotten her ears pierced by the same girl using the same earings!!!!

Not only will they get to share their baptism together but they also inadvertantly got earings on the same day :D

My parents brought this cute purse with accessories. The main gift was a fish and fish tank. Kaitlin named her male beta Dexter after the naughty monkey from the movie, Night at the Museum.

Summit Entertainment today unveils its angst-filled poster for the "Twilight" sequel "New Moon." In the movie, Bella (Kristen Stewart) is divided between the world of vampire loverboy Edward (Robert Pattinson) and her buddy Jacob the werewolf (Taylor Lautner). The love triangle hits theaters Nov. 20.

Mother's Day was a nice relaxing day for me. Often I feel tired and overworked from raising my family and running a day care (which are rewarding but also challenging). The best gift I received was...no kids or cooking for the day.

When Briony Tallis, 13 years old and an aspiring writer, sees her older sister Cecilia and Robbie Turner at the fountain in front of the family estate she misinterprets what is happening thus setting into motion a series of misunderstandings and a childish pique that will have lasting repercussions for all of them. Robbie is the son of a family servant toward whom the family has always been kind. After the fountain incident, Briony reads a letter intended for Cecilia and concludes that Robbie is a deviant. When her cousin Lola is raped, she tells the police that it was Robbie she saw committing the deed when in fact it was a visitor to the estate.

I watching this not knowing anything about the plot. Mike and I really liked it, the cinematography was fantastic and the actors were very believeable. Thumbs up.

Hotel handyman Skeeter Bronson's life is changed forever when the bedtime stories he tells his niece and nephew start to mysteriously come true. He attempts to take advantage of the phenomenon, incorporating his own aspirations into one outlandish tale after another, but it's the kids' unexpected contributions that turn Skeeter's life upside down.

I wasn't crazy about this movie. True to all of Adam Sandler's films but a very toned down version. In all honesty...was a bit boring, but our kids liked it.

Paul Blart is a mild-mannered, dutiful family man who works as a security guard in a New Jersey mall. For years, he has applied to become a cop, but he always fails the physical exam because he is overweight. One day, a gang of organized criminals put the mall under siege and take hostages. Blart becomes trapped inside, and because of his sense of duty, refuses to leave. He thus becomes the police department's eyes on the inside and attempts to stop the criminals on his own.

I find Kevin James absolutely hilarious so I might be biased on this one. This story had me pulling for the underdog, it was funny, heartwarming and very appropriate for younger viewers.

Every member of the family loved this one. Two thumbs up.

Liv (Kate Hudson) and Emma (Anne Hathaway) are best friends who since childhood have planned every detail of their respective weddings. At the top of their bridal "must have" list: a ceremony at New York's ultimate bridal destination, the Plaza Hotel. Now, at age 26, they're both about to get married; they're about to realize their dreams; and they're about to live happily ever after. When a clerical error causes a clash in wedding dates - they're now to be married on the same date! - Liv, Emma and their lifelong friendship are put to the ultimate test.

"Torture" is the best word to describe this flick!! I love chick flicks just as much as the next girl but this one was almost painful to watch. The slapstick comedy had me chuckling once or twice but most of the time I was just trying to stay awake! It wasn't hard to figure out the plot which was quite predictable. What's the saying?.. "I wrote the plot"!

Frazzled

This is me.

Today is the first day I have a new baby to babysit. He's 6 weeks old, a sweet little thing who doesn't cause any trouble. I think I lucked out there.

However...

I'm struggling a bit. It's difficult to juggle his needs and the needs of 3 toddlers. They are used to getting what they need right away and today they have to be patient through all the feedings and diaper changes. This has caused some acting out and general misbehaving, including Kaeleigh taking off her diaper and wetting the floor, food fights, fist fights and resisting nap time(one of them is still awake).

So...this is me now.

Defence is the name of the game, it's survival of the fitest!

My plan... make like water off a ducks back and go with the flow.
It'll take time (it always does) to settle into the new routine but I know without a doubt it'll get easier. I'm confident I can handle this change. Said my Mum over the phone this morning ,"What? Super Mom is frazzled?! I've never seen you frazzled" Of course, I laughed at that, but couldn't help being proud of myself for the days accomplishments...

2 older kids at school w/out forgeting anything - check

5 children feed, cleaned and safe - check

dinner in the crock pot - check

laundry - check

dirty dishes in the dishwasher - check

tidy house - check

You better believe I'm gonna crash later! I'll probably need the kids to tuck me into bed.
So...as I sit here at my computer enjoying the blessed silence and quiet snores from 5 children (yes the last stubborn child is asleep now) I'll recharge my battery and feel thankful for the amazing blessings in my life...love, health, safety, family, a good job, music, the scriptures, friendship, the gospel of Jesus Christ (not in that order) and get ready for the noise and caos that will consume my home later.

Life is Good, keep your shoulder to the wheel ;D

Movie Review 12

Is there solace in revenge? Bond and "M" sniff a shadowy international network of power and corruption reaping billions. As Bond pursues the agents of an assassination attempt on "M," all roads lead to Dominic Greene, a world-renowned developer of green technology. Only Bond, with help from a retired spy and from a mysterious beauty, stands in Greene's way. "M" wonders if she can trust Bond, or if vengeance possesses him. Beyond that, can anyone drawn to Bond live to tell the tale?

Mike and I LOVED this movie. The action scenes were amazing and the romantic scenes were tame compared to other bond films. We had a bit of trouble following the plot which you can't afford to do during this fast paced movie. Overall, this was very entertaining.

In "Awake," a psychological thriller that tells the story of a man undergoing heart surgery while experiencing a phenomenon called "anesthetic awareness," which leaves him awake but paralyzed throughout the operation. As various obstacles present themselves, his wife must make life-altering decisions while wrestling with her own personal drama.

Thriller is the word here...I was on the edge of my seat and to be honest, grossed out at times. This story has a suprising twist which left me putting all kinds of pieces together. The plot was pretty easy to follow, the director did a good job of letting the story unfold naturally.

Another thumbs up.

In northern Australia at the beginning of World War II, an English aristocrat inherits a cattle station the size of Maryland. When English cattle barons plot to take her land, she reluctantly joins forces with a rough-hewn stock-man to drive 2,000 head of cattle across hundreds of miles of the country's most unforgiving land, only to still face the bombing of Darwin, Australia, by the Japanese forces that had attacked Pearl Harbor only months earlier.

I watched this movie not knowing anything about the plot, it's a fictional story built around true events in history. The cinematography was stunning but the filters got annoying at times. The actors did a great job, anything with Hugh Jackman is always a safe bet in my opinion ;)

This one covers all the bases...action,drama and romance... a nice movie for couples.

Go Speed Racer!

The night before, all the boys had to weigh and register their cars. Braden had to add some weight and it ended up being exactly 5oz...perfect :) All the cars got locked up until the race the following evening.

We charged our camera battery the day of and beat all the odds by arriving early and snagging front row seats, mission accomplished, all we had to do was sit back and enjoy the show.

26 cars, 4 races each (once in each lane)... Let the races begin!

Lane 2 - 3rd place

Hum...that's a shame...it's not doing so well...did we forget something???

Uh-oh...graphite!!!!! I can't believe we forgot to add the key ingredient :(

Karen raced to the car and added graphite with just a moment to spare...here we go...

WHAT!!!??? He got 1st place? It worked!...too bad we didn't get it on sooner, Braden might've had a chance to place.

Karen was extremely disappointed, the car wasn't the best it could be (due to parental error).

We all had refreshments and watched as the boys got to compete again (just for fun).

Braden won 1st place - twice and 2nd place - twice. I felt for sure he could've done better but I put it behind me and enjoyed the night.

Award ceremony...cheese :)

A SUPRISE TWIST...

Our family was leaving when 2 officials along with Braden's pack leader stopped us, they were holding two sheets of paper and looked excited. The first paper was pre-graphite it showed Braden in 18th place...to be expected. The second paper was post-graphite and it showed Braden in 5th place.

Excuse me? Hold the phone! You mean Braden moved up 13 places with just 1 final race?

YAHOO...We were soooo excited to know that "Bolt" did better than we thought and if raced with graphite for all 4 races...he might have been in the top 3!!!

Oh...parental guilt released :D

Later that night I passed by Braden's room. He was laying in bed holding his car in the air and singing "I am the champion"!

Even though he didn't win the race, Braden was happy in the knowledge that he built an amazing and fast car...

And I'm happy that his last race was memorable. Who knows, maybe he'll have a son and can do it all again (vicariously of course) ;)

Which reminds me of the movie.

It was cute and funny :)

The Making Of...

Braden chose the design and colors, he sanded and painted his derby car...

car and supplies.

Naturally an adult had to use the power tool. Cool recessed lightning bolt!

Blue spray paint, it took a lot of coats.

Time to paint the bolt.

Lost in concentration.

The wheels were a power tool neccessity (for speed)...sorry Braden adults only but you did spray paint the trim pieces :)

Now for the final touches...glue on the trim, add the wheels and spray a clear coat.

Voila.

Job well done...we think :)

Race Day ~ Down and Derby

*Tonight is RACE DAY ~ Braden's LAST one!
You're welcome to come and cheer for Braden, the race starts at 6pm.

The Boy Scouts have organized for an electronic track to be set-up this year. I'm glad because Braden was cheated the other times when they had the wooden track. The first year his car kept getting stuck and last year they got his name confused with a Brandon and he missed some races! Here's hoping for a fair race.

A fun family comedy about a childrens' pine wood derby race that turns an average group of dads into an awkward bunch of competitors.

We plan on watching this movie with the kids. Never seen it before but it looks cute. Will let you know how we like it.

A Taste of Home

The World Market is sadly closing it's doors in Omaha. This means no more treats from across the pond (refering to the Atlantic Ocean).

It's enough to put me into depression :(

I'll miss eating...fruit pastels, fruit gums, crunchies, curly-wurlys, hob nobs and other digestive varieties just to name a few.

But wait!!!

All is not lost... at least I can still get a Cadbury bar from my local supermarket.

Mike's grandpa lives at this assisted living in Bountiful, Utah. Grandpa was not hurt but it certainly looks nasty in there!

A ceiling collapse at an assisted-living center in Bountiful Tuesday evening forced the evacuation of everyone inside. Bountiful police say the collapse was caused by a water leak.
That may not sound bad, but the leak caused a piece of ceiling the size of a fire truck to collapse.
In wheelchairs and with walkers, residents of Legacy House Assisted Living Center were evacuated. Eva Woolf was just getting into bed when she was helped outside.
"I thought another false alarm, and they started pounding on the door telling me to grab my coat," Woolf said. "I was in my nightgown, so I grabbed my robe."
Inside, chunks of ceiling rest on chairs and exercise equipment in the 2nd floor common room. Bountiful police say no one was injured. "Everyone's accounted for. I believe 97 people were moved to the church," Sgt. Ed Biehler said.
That church was quickly transformed into a shelter. Firefighters carried oxygen tanks inside, and nurses ran medication and blankets back and forth as family members arrived to check on loved ones.
"I had a note from my wife that there had been a cave-in, and my sister is here," Steven Nielson said.
Shella Shingleton, who's mother lives in the center, said, "The residents look a little nervous. I've had a couple of them come up to me and say: ‘Are you my daughter?' because they're waiting for family."
Singleton connected with her mom and got her two dogs. She plans on her mom staying with her at least for the night.
"I understand it happened in the center of the building at that time. I would say people were in the dining room eating, so I'm surprised no one was hurt," she said.
A lot of the residents we spoke to tonight wanted to pass along their thanks to the many people who stopped to help. They say many were assisting them across the street; others brought food and blankets.

Target Practice

My parents bought each other a BB gun for Christmas so naturally we all had fun shooting some empty pop cans.
We had a competition to see who could hit 10 cans with only 10 shots, Mum and I were opponents and each won a game....sooo.....I guess it was a "draw" ;D

Braden was a natural...he rarely missed.

Kaitlin did ok after a short lesson on aim. Poor little thing could hardly hold the rifle to her shoulder! She hit a few cans and had fun in the process.

Movie Review 11

For super-dog Bolt, every day is filled with adventure, danger and intrigue - at least until the cameras stop rolling. When the canine star of a hit TV show is accidentally shipped from his Hollywood soundstage to New York City, he begins his biggest adventure yet - a cross-country journey through the real world. Armed only with the delusions that all his amazing feats and powers are real, and with the help of two unlikely traveling companions - a jaded, abandoned housecat named Mittens and TV-obsessed hamster in a plastic ball named Rhino - Bolt discovers he doesn't need superpowers to be a hero.

I found this movie to have a sweet story sprinkled with comedy. Another feel good movie that families will enjoy.

Roger Ferris is a CIA operative in the Middle East; Ed Hoffman is his control at Langley. Cynicism is everywhere. In Amman, Roger works with Hani Salaam, Jordan's head of security, whose only dictum is "Don't lie to me." The Americans are in pursuit of a cleric who leads a group placing bombs all over Europe. When Hani rebukes Ed's demand that Jordan allow the Americans to use one of Jordan's double agents, Roger and Ed hatch a plan to bring the cleric to them. The plan is complicated by its being a secret from Hani and by Roger's attraction to a local nurse. Satellites and cell phones, bodies and lies: modern warfare.

I got a bit lost trying to follow the plot, it was quite graphic in places and the "f" word was used. I thought the action sequences were cool but on the hole wished that I'd never picked this one. It seems that they spent a lot of time making sure the movie was true to the brutality of war. Not for the faint of heart or haters of bad language. A big thumbs down for me.

Joe, an international hit man who follows a simple code, arrives in Bangkok for his last contract - four kills and then retirement. He hires Kong, a local street hustler, to run his errands, and he gets to work. By the second hit, Joe has started violating his four rules, losing his anonymity, leaving behind traces, and getting emotionally involved. Only one rule remains intact: don't ask questions. Can Joe regain his footing and get out alive?

Nick, Nick, Nick..what happened dude? I was expecting much more. This one was just "ok" I still enjoyed it but found the plot to drag out a bit. I think the "f" word was used here too but I don't remember. Not a repeat viewing for me I'm afraid.

My Friend

Jamie is my friend from school. He's a primate keeper at the zoo in Kent, England. He told me last month that he'd been hand rearing a baby monkey. It's not the first time he's done it but this time he was interviewed because of a large cash donation made to the zoo.

13th Anniversary

Mike and I went out for dinner to The Cheesecake Factory.
The perfect time to go is between lunch and dinner. The service was wonderful and the food was just as good. We will definately go again but probably not with the kids as it can get expensive. I couldn't believe how many people were waiting to be seated...we had to swim through people to get out!

Our choice of dessert...white chocolate raspberry truffle.

It costs $7 per slice of cheesecake but only $22 for a whole cake that serves 7-8. We figured for $8 more it was worth getting the whole sha-bang of deliciousness...teehee ;)

Homeowner Woes

Mike had to do his Hercules impression while I backed the cars out.

Here's what happened.....

This morning I opened the door and realized that the garage door was left open all night. That was pretty annoying so I grumbled and hit the button to close it, half way down it started to make a horrible banging sound and I looked up to see the door getting mangled. I quickly hit the button to stop it.

Oh boy...it didn't look good.

The handle to the shovel had gotten wedged between the track and the wall. It had stopped the door from coming down and unfortunately the motor kept running. It actually forced the track on the opposite side to bend and ripped the motor arm right off the door.

The worst part is our insurance deductable is $1000!!!!! We have someone from Overhead Door coming out for an estimate...but I won't hold my breath, I'm sure it'll be costly.

Looks like it might be a trip to Menards and a weekend DIY project in our near future. I hope we can fix it :(

For Christmas my mother in law gave me a subscrption to Family Fun Magazine. This months issue has been very helpful with ideas for Valentines Day. The kids made these gifts for their teachers and classmates.

This locker is great for valentines cards and treats (made out of a cracker box).
As luck would have it the school mascot is a mountain lion..lol

These treats are a variation of the craft below.

Children's Hospital

*UPDATE* Her blood work shows no problems so we will check it again before she hits puberty.

Mike and I noticed that whenever Kaeleigh gets a cut it take's longer than normal to stop bleeding. We mentioned this to her doctor who felt it a good idea to get a blood test done. She needs to find out if Kaeleigh has a clotting problem. I'm interested to see what the results are as this isn't in our family history.

Mike took Kaeleigh for the appointment which was probably better. Apparently he and another nurse had to hold her still for the blood draw. As soon as it was done she sat up and stopped crying...hmm...must have been the strangers with masks that brought on the tears!!!

In the picture she's showing me her "ow" and grimacing at the memory. She was quite put out but none the worse for wear :)

Movie Review 11

Coming together to solve a series of murders in New York City are a DEA agent whose family was slain as part of a conspiracy and an assassin out to avenge her sister's death. The duo will be hunted by the police, the mob, and a ruthless corporation.

It was very slow for the first half of the movie but the action at the end was pretty good. A mediocre story, not one of Mark Wahlberg's best movies (his performance was good though).

In this continuation to the adventure of the demon superhero, an evil elf breaks an ancient pact between humans and creatures, as he declares war against humanity. He is on a mission to release The Golden Army, a deadly group of fighting machines that can destroy the human race. As Hell on Earth is ready to erupt, Hellboy and his crew set out to defeat the evil prince before The Golden Army can destroy humanity's existence.

I liked this movie better than the first one. It was full of cool stunts and FX. The kids liked this one too.

Depicting the events after the Gamma Bomb. 'The Incredible Hulk' tells the story of Dr Bruce Banner, who seeks a cure to his unique condition, which causes him to turn into a giant green monster under emotional stress. Whilst on the run from military which seeks his capture, Banner comes close to a cure. But all is lost when a new creature emerges; The Abomination.

I was surprised at this one. I liked it quite alot. We let the kids sit in on the movie too and they really liked it. I actually thought it was another remake of the first hulk movie (the one with eric bana as the hulk) I didn't realize that this was a sequel...duh!!

When the kids got home from school yesterday...Braden took a brief trip to "Doofusville" as we affectionately call "mistakes" or "relapses in rational thinking" at our house.
He took his frustration out on Kaitlin by hitting her.
Yes, I know it's very sad...but true :(

We tell him the usual stuff about how inappropriate it is to hit "yada yada yada" and then send him to his room. Mike decided to give him two choices 1. stay in his room or 2. write "I love my Sister" 200 times.

Braden almost choked on the second option but decided it was better than being sentenced to his room for the night. He did it!

Unfortunately he edited the word love out of the sentence and inserted "like". His reasoning for this was that "like" is easier to write than "love". Yea right Braden, we all know that you don't want to appear as if you do, in fact, actually "love" Kaitlin ;O

The year is 2700, and planet Earth has long been uninhabitable. The kids and I thought it was a very sweet story. Pixar did a good job at giving the robots character and emotions. Cute little robots = heartwarming story.

good version of a classic movie/book. Fun for the kids and contains great cinematography. The only trouble with 3D is... in order to see the effects you have to sacrifice all other colors!! I would forget it and just watch the regular version.

The story has Rick O'Connell's (Brendan Fraser) son Alex (Luke Ford) discovering the tomb of Han, the first Emperor of China (Jet Li). This leads Rick and his wife Evelyn (Maria Bello) to travel to China, where an evil General causes the resurrection of Han. The Emperor then tries to break an ancient curse set on him by the witch Zi Yuan (Michelle Yeoh), so Han can use his magical powers to bring his army back to life to conquer the world.

We enjoyed this movie. A fun action adventure full of cool special effects and a few handsome men didn't hurt ;)

Christian Bale returns to the role of Batman, Maggie Gyllenhaal takes over the role of Rachel Dawes (played by Katie Holmes in Batman Begins), and Brokeback Mountain star Heath Ledger dons the ghoulishly gleeful Joker makeup previously worn by Jack Nicholson and Cesar Romero. Just as it begins to appear as if Batman, Lt. James Gordon (Gary Oldman), and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) are making headway in their tireless battle against the criminal element, a maniacal, wisecracking fiend plunges the streets of Gotham City into complete chaos.

Mike and I found this movie very intense and shooking at times. Definately not a good one for young kids. Heath Ledger's performance was amazing and creepy, he brought something extra into this role.

If you're a batman fan this one blows all the previous movies out of the water, but definately has a lot more gore in it.

We were invited by my mom to see "Santa" who was visiting her work. Kaitlin was very excited and wrote a list of 13 things she wants for Christmas.
Braden was too cool to sit on Santa's knee and Kaeleigh was too afraid. Oh well ~ one out of three aint bad.

TWILIGHT When Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) reluctantly moved to the perpetually overcast town of Forks, WA, and set out to carve a niche for herself, she assumed it would be one similar to the low-profile social position she held back in Phoenix. Before long, the unlikely soul mates find themselves in a passionate relationship with a variety of significant setbacks, including Edward's special-needs diet (he doesn't eat humans, but Bella's scent inspires a nearly impossible to harness bloodlust) and the human girl's mortality. Though things proceed relatively smoothly at first (Edward even introduces Bella to his adoptive vampire family), a visiting vampire clan consisting of James (Cam Gigandet), Victoria (Rachelle Lefevre), and Laurent (Edi Gathegi) catches Bella's unique scent and threatens the young couple's budding, if dangerous, happiness. It's no secret that I've anticipated this movie. I'm really enjoying the books, written by Stephanie Meyer. I dragged Mike to the theater to see this one. This was the first time that I read the book before watching the movie so I felt I would be disappointed,you can never put everything in a movie with a time limit. Mike said the story flowed well but for me it seemed choppy in the beginning. It didn't detract from how much I enjoyed the movie, I loved it and now when I re-read the book I can see the actors in my mind... who were absolutely perfect choices for their parts. They nailed everyone perfectly in my opinion.
I'm eagerly awaiting the next movie in the series...New Moon :D

Harrison Ford reprises his role as the iconic, snake-loathing screen hero in a sequel that also finds Karen Allen returning to the series for the first time since 1981's Raiders of the Lost Ark. Ray Winstone, John Hurt, Jim Broadbent, and Shia LaBeouf round out a cast that also features Cate Blanchett in the role of villainous Russian operative Agent Irina Spalko.

We watched this in the theater. It was good, very much like the other Indiana Jones movies. A good sequel but had one or two unrealistic parts. Lots of action in this flick... great movie.

Jerry Shaw (LaBeouf) and Rachel Holloman (Monaghan) were complete strangers at the beginning of the day, but that changed the instant a strange woman called to threaten both their lives and the lives of their loved ones. Suddenly forced into a series of increasingly dangerous situations, Jerry and Rachel must now take orders from a woman who's using everyday technology to track and control their every move. As the situation intensifies and the hapless duo are deemed the country's most wanted fugitives, they must work together in order to discover who it was that turned their lives upside down, and what they can do to thwart the criminal mastermind's cunning yet diabolical plan.

Mike and I watched this in the theater, It was awesome. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. We would definately see it again.

Babysitting Update

I've just had the opportunity to bring three kids into my home. As a result I will be getting certified by the state and become a day care provider.
My goal is to have a very limited number of spots available, about 5. I've done this for three reasons.

1. I can't handle more than that.

2. I want to give each child the one on one attention they deserve. I'm not sure if they get that from a day care center.

3. I need to fit them in my vehicle.

I'll be making my schedule more structured from now on. This involves a weekly menu plan and a daily schedule with enrichment activities.
I feel very positive about this but also overwhelmed as there's a lot of state requirements to meet.

As most of my friends know...I don't read much, but a friend gave me this book and said it was great. Unsure of the story I decided to give it a try. Quite a few people have read this story and loved it, I quickly realised that I would love it too.

I couldn't pull myself out of the book until the third chapter, not because my interest faded but simply because it took 52 pages to break away!

When not reading I wonder what will happen next, it's as if a fire has been rekindled (I enjoyed reading as a child and teen but it faded away when I had my family).

I'd heard the movie will be in theatres on Nov 21st and did some math, realizing that I would need to read 70 pages a day in order to finish.

I chortled to myself knowing full well that it would be an impossibilty (for me anyway, I read slowly to fully enjoy what I'm reading).

I must say that it has been an effortless task...no...a joy reading this book. I've been reading for 2 days and already I'm half way through...that's 276 pages. There's something about this book that I adore but I can't put my finger on it.

Here's hoping the movie will live up to my expectations.

Jenny Oaks Baker absolutely blew me away with her talent. She's so adorable I just wanted to run up there a give her a hug. She was full of grace and humility but also showed us how normal she is. We could all relate to her but at the same time were in awe of her talent.

Cherie Call. Her voice and mannerism reminds me of Jodie Foster.

I wasn't sure if I would come away with anything that would help me in my life but actually I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed every speaker and musical performer, each one was great and had a special message to share.
They said a few things which helped me to re-focus my thoughts and feelings.

I left the convention feeling emotionally and physically drained but with a newfound understanding of some things which I was struggling with personally. Maybe now I can tweak those things and find improvement; where before I found only baracades hindering my progression towards a better me.

I'm grateful to my loving Heavenly Father who provided a way for me to attend this event and give me exactly what I need to endure a difficult time in my life.

A huge thank you to Mike for taking care of our kids so that I could be recharged and refreshed.

Sanity Saver aka Toddler Trap

Kaeleigh is quite the climber and at 16 months she can climb up the front of the oven and her high chair (standing triumphantly on the tray) but more recently she has discovered the art of crib escapes.

Mike and I heard banging coming from her room and then a loud thud followed by screaming. Kaeleigh had scaled the foot board (which is flat - it's attached to the changing table). Apparently she was stomping on top of the changing table and lost her balance ending up on the floor...she was fine. I on the other hand let out a long disgruntled groan at the realization that my life would officially be over now that she couldn't be safely contained.

Queue the sympathetic "uh huh" from moms around the world.

The next day I put Kaeleigh down for her morning nap, hoping she remembered her scarry fall. A short while later I went to check on Lil' Miss Houdini...

She was perched atop the changing table, talking to the birds out the window!

Oh Boy...I guess it's confirmed. The crib needs to be converted to the toddler bed and everything in the room will no longer be safe.

Now for the good news...

My best friend came to the rescue and brought me the "Crib Tent II" made by tots in mind.

Let me tell you, they deserve every penny for that wonderful idea!!

It's brilliant and I have my sanity back...for a short time anyway.

First Family Campout

Mahoney State Park in Ashland Nebraska is a great park with lots of kid friendly activities. They have horseback riding, mini golf, a giant indoor playground, water park, ice-skating rink and togogan run. Too bad that nothing was open!!!

Our awesome tent, it has three rooms. They've certainly come a long way since I was camping as a child, It only takes 10 minutes to set up.

We looked online and chose this great spot in Little Creek. It wasn't until the evening that we realized our true location...

We were seranaded by crickets, a coyote and an owl but these lovely sounds were drowned out by Interstate 80, a couple of helicopters and trains going past every 30 minutes (sounding their horns loudly) along a track on the other side of the wood!

We waited till the evening to have a picnic at the park. It was just too hot to go out any earlier. Braden wanted to go to Ta-Ha-Zu-Ka park because of the tank and skatepark. Very Patriotic

Amazing Day At The Zoo

Every year Mike's best friend and his family come to Omaha to visit. We usually go to the zoo and this year was no different...except for a couple of cool things we don't usually see.

The weather was great and the kids were behaving..double bonus.

This diver was pulling faces at the kids while cleaning the tank.
Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water!

I thought for sure she would attack me.

This moth was hidden well against a tree. I almost missed it.
This giant butterfly first landed on my back and then went up my sleeve. It was beautiful but gave me the heebie- geebies.

As you can see, this spider is about the size of a cricket. I found one in the tall weeds behind our house (before it was developed). It was the size of a dinner plate..yikes!

First Day of School

Braden and Kaitlin were excited to start school. Their first day was August 14th. They've both had a good start to the year and are very happy with their teachers. I hope the rest of school will go just as well.

Keith Willis Teague, age 88, of Council Bluffs, passed away August 2, 2008, at his home with his family at his side.

Keith was born in Russell Springs, Kan., on April 21, 1920, to Mark and Leila Jordan Teague. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson in 1939 and participated in many sports there earning a scholarship to Coe College in Cedar Rapids where he received his BA in 1943, and later his MBA from Creighton University. Keith served in the US Army from 1941-1943. Keith worked for Union Pacific Railroad for 39 years and retired as General Manager of the Property Tax Dept.

His life focused on his family, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day-Saints and coaching youth baseball where he started the West End Hustler Baseball Team. He served as director of Council Bluffs Recreational Baseball and belonged to various tax organizations.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Joshua Schutjer; and infant brothers, Robert and Derral.

Survivors include his high school sweetheart Madeline (Meidlinger) Teague whom he married on December 4, 1943; his children and spouses, Dennis and Afton of Omaha, Jean Rardin and Charles, and Douglas all of Salt Lake City, Julia Farrell and Paul of Ralston, Dan and Mary of Council Bluffs; 13 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; sisters, Helen Christiansen and Maxine Johnston both of Council Bluffs.

Visitation with the family Wednesaday 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home. Funeral services Thursday 11:00 a.m. at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day-Saints, 2303 Butler Street. Bishop David Hanks officiant and Ron Bendorf Eulogist. Mike is Store Director of the NEW Bed Bath & Beyond store in Council Bluffs, Iowa... Hooray :)

He was store director for a food chain called Bag N Save but since changing employers, Mike's had to work from the ground up again. It's taken two years of hard work and sacrifice to get here. Mike's spent the last month preparing the store for the Grand Opening on August 5th 2008.

He has a 30-40 minute commute across Omaha but we're happy for the step forward in Mike's career. I'm sure the drive isn't bad compared to others.

The only thing that make's me sad is.. I can't go and visit him at work as often as I used to :(

We've had many challenges in our lives this year including the passing of Mike's Grandmother and Grandfather but we recognize and are thankful for our many blessings. This promotion is one of those blessings.

Gimme, Gimme, Gimme... a girls' night out

A bunch of my friends and I went to see "Mamma Mia" at the movie theater last night. It was tons of fun and afterwards some of us went to Sonic for ice-cream.

The movie was pretty good. I enjoyed all the cast but was a little weirded out listening to oo7 sing! He can sing but I expected to hear a different voice from him. A great chick flick with humor, silliness and one or two tears.
Oh, and a big hit if you like ABBA songs. If you don't then you shouldn't "take a chance"... run in the opposite direction...and don't waste your "money, money, money" :)

Sonic was a BLAST...get it?
We sat amidst the teenagers and kamikaze bugs in the mild humidity for about an hour; enjoying each others company without being interupted by our children, but I think we were making as much noise as the youth around us who were doing tricks on their bikes and huddling in groups around their cars.
Suddenly I found myself 30 going on 18, hanging out with my girls on a friday night (except England doesn't have anything like a Sonic Drive-In or jungle-like humidity).

So I say "viva womanhood, friendships old and new, summer nights, free time and good husbands who give as a break once in a while...thanks "Honey, Honey" I love ya ;)

10,000 BC (blu-ray)
A prehistoric epic that follows a young mammoth hunter named D'Leh's journey through uncharted territory to secure the future of his tribe. When a band of mysterious horse-riding warlords raid the Yaghal camp and kidnaps his heart's desire - the beautiful Evolet along with many others, D'Leh is forced to lead a small group of hunters south to pursue the warlords to the end of the world to save her. Driven by destiny, the unlikely band of warriors must battle saber-toothed cats and terror birds.
Two thumbs way up. We loved this movie, the kids loved it too. I only recognized Omar Sharif (Doctor Zhivago) and Cliff Curtis (live free or die hard) but all the actors were great.

Fool's Gold (blu-ray)
Benjamin Finnegan (Matthew McConaughey) is a deep-sea treasure hunter certain he's onto the find of the century in waters near an island close to Key West owned by a murderous rap star to whom Ben is in debt. Ben's flat broke and recently divorced from Tess (Kate Hudson), his long-time research and diving partner whom he still loves. She's nearby, working as a steward aboard the yacht of Nigel Honeycutt (donald sutherland), a multimillionaire. The rapper (Kevin Hart) has hired a rival treasurer hunter. Can Ben convince Nigel to bankroll his search, convince Tess to work with him, keep the rapper and his thugs at bay, and find a Spanish treasure hidden for centuries and become rich beyond imagination?
Great adventure/comedy that's a bit silly. I always enjoy Matthew and Kate's movies so the fact that they're together in this one is perfect. Not bad eye candy either, oops did I say that out loud?!

Jumper (blu-ray)
A genetic anomaly allows David Rice (Hayden Christensen) to teleport himself anywhere. He discovers this gift has existed for centuries and finds himself in a war that has been raging for thousands of years between "Jumpers" and those who have sworn to kill them. Is everyone close to David in danger? Diane Lane Jamie Bell and Samuel L. Jackson are among the cast.
Cool special effects. Very interesting plot too. We liked this movie very much, I would rent it again.

Get Smart (movie theater)
Bungling secret agent Maxwell Smart, also known as Agent 86 for CONTROL, is on a mission to battle the forces of their evil crime nemesis known as KAOS with his more-competent partner Agent 99, (whose real name is never revealed) at his side. When the headquarters of U.S. spy agency Control is attacked and the identities of its agents compromised, the Chief has no choice but to promote his ever-eager analyst Maxwell Smart, who has always dreamed of working in the field alongside stalwart superstar Agent 23. Smart will do whatever it takes to thwart the latest plot for world domination by KAOS.
Steve Carell (the office, over the hedge), Anne Hathaway (the other side of heaven, becoming Jane) and Dwayne Johnson (the rundown, the game plan) head up the cast.
Very funny as expected. Two thumbs up. It was fun to re-live the good old days when I watched the series as a child (which were re-runs, come on i'm not that old..oops, sorry Mom).

3:10 to Yuma
Rancher Dan Evans (Christian Bale) heads into Bisbee to clear up issues concerning the sake of his land when he witnesses the closing events of a stagecoach robbery led by famed outlaw Ben Wade (Russell Crowe). Wade is captured by the law in Bisbee and Evans finds himself one of the escorts who will take Wade to the 3:10 to Yuma train in Contention for the reward of $200. The transport to Contention is hazardous and filled with ambushes by Indians, pursuits by Wade's vengeful gang and Wade's own conniving and surreptitious demeanor that makes the ride all the more intense.
We found this movie entertaining. Typical western style.

Cloverfield
A group of friends throw a party for Rob, who is leaving New York to go and work in Japan. A giant creature arrives in the city causing mass destruction. Told from the viewfinder of their video camera, Cloverfield shows how Rob and his friends venture deep into the streets of New York, avoiding the creature however possible, determined to rescue Rob's true love from her destroyed apartment building in midtown.
This was a great monster movie. I enjoyed the different style of movie making which puts more human elements in the story. The alternate endings are good.

In The Name Of The King
A man named Farmer (Jason Statham) sets out to rescue his kidnapped wife and avenge the death of his son -- two acts committed by the Krugs, a race of animal-warriors who are controlled by the evil Gallian (Ray Liotta). Gallian plans to rule the kingdom but Farmer has other ideas and enlists the help of others to defeat gallian. Other cast members include..Leelee sobieski, John Rhys-Davies,Matthew Lillard and Burt Reynolds.
The story was ok considering it's from a video game. It was similar to Lord of the Rings; not the best movie but not the worst in my opinion. You could probably get by in life without seeing it but if you feel like watching a hero movie, go for it.

National Teasure 2
When a missing page from the diary of John Wilkes Booth surfaces, Bens great-great grandfather is suddenly implicated as a key conspirator in Abraham Lincolns death. Determined to prove his ancestors innocence, Ben (Nicolas Cage) follows an international chain of clues that takes him on a chase from Paris to London and ultimately back to America. This journey leads Ben and his crew (Diane Kruger, John Voight, Justin Bartha and Helen Mirren) not only to surprising revelations but to the trail of the worlds most treasured secrets.
I really enjoyed the first movie so naturally I liked this next one. At times it felt like I was watching the first movie again but with different treasure, that's a bit of a let down. It's still very good and quite nail-biting in places. Definately worth sacrificing a night out to watch.

Storm hits too close to home

As a precurser to the celebration we were visited by a monster wind storm. My account of the events...

It's around 4pm, I'm vacuuming, Mike's on the computer in the basement and the older kids are out riding their bikes. The warning siren sounds which is confusing because we didn't know of any severe weather today. The kids come barrelling in the front door...they think a tornado is coming.
The news station reports a wind storm coming with winds 70-90mph and large hail. The clouds coming over head were amazing, i'd never seen clouds move so fast. We had the kids on their way to the basement and I remembered my flip-flops on the deck and naturally didn't want them to blow away. I stuck my head outside and pulled them inside but in doing so I heard the wind coming. It was so loud I thought it was a tornado. All five of us crammed into the basement closet and weathered some scary noises. We took a look out the window and visability was zero. Then came the hail and I was sure that the windows would break and the Jeep was sitting in the driveway which Mike thought would have damage (it didn't).

The aftermath was quite surreal. Walmarts fence behind our house was blown down in places, our trampolene had been picked up and moved over (first time that's happened), leaf debris was plastered on everyones houses, reports of traffic lights knocked down and trailers blown over and we had water runoff cascading down our street not to mention the drifts of marble sized hail everywhere. We have friends who live close to us who lost their fences and got windows smashed. There are some homes by our church building that suffered severe damage.

Mountaineer in Training

Kaeleigh was just 11 months when she spontaneously climbed the rock wall of our swing set. Today she climbed the wall and was peaking through the wood slats at me. She was really cute even when I had to race over there and stop her from going headfirst down the slide. As you can tell..I have a climber on my hands.

Oh and if you were wondering, she's pretty good on the stairs too!

The Robins Take Flight

This little cutie is one of three that left the nest and is now being feed by it's parents in our back yard. It's funny to watch it crashing around. We found it taking shelter from a storm by standing up against the bottom of our patio door. Good luck little fella!

Now we have a second nest in our tree housed by more robins!

Braden took it quite literally when Mike suggested he should cut his hair. We just couldn't hold back the laughter. I think he has an uncanny resemblance to Mr. Spock.

Day Trip to Winter Quarters

(below) This violin belonged to Mike's great great great grandfather, Isaac Morley who was friends with Joseph and Emma Smith. Isaac let the Smiths live in a cabin on his farm which is where they delivered and lost their twins. He endured persecution in Nauvoo and lost his first wife at winter quarters where she is now buried. I love having that close tie to the pioneers whom I admire so much. Isaac played the violin all during the journey across the plains to the Salt Lake valley.

My friend Karen and I took our kids to the Mormon Trail Center which is a short ride across town. The weather couldn't have been more lovely. We learnt about the pioneers and enjoyed the beauty of the cemetary. Our kids had fun playing hide and seek while we sat on a bench with our babies and talked.

Tornado : Round 2

Tonight was another crazy evening of storms. I was able to get this video of a tornado forming just north of my house. It was very close and unfortunately it moved over into Iowa where it killed 4 boy scouts and injured many others at Little Sioux Boy Scout Camp.

Baby Robins

For the first time in 5 years...I have babies! Baby birds that is.

Despite my efforts in the past to have a regular supply of food and water, birds never nested in my tree.

A mother and father robin have been raising three babies and it's been great to see the dynamics of a bird family. The adults take turns providing and protecting. One protects while the other gets food (usually worms, which has been in abundance from all the rains) it's like a tag team.

Little by little I could see heads bobbing up and down and getting larger. Just today Kaitlin came running in saying that one of the babies was on a branch. She was right and there it was just hanging around the nest. I had to take a picture before it's tail feathers came in because I'm sure once that happens they'll be on their way. Maybe I can get some video of flying lessons ;)

Tornado Damage

Some of you might have heard on the news about the storms rolling through the midwest. We had our very own tornado in the city, Aren't we lucky...NOT.

It developed from downdrafts (which is rare) so the sirens sounded after the fact. Not good for a lot of people who were still asleep in their beds.
We happened to be awake with Kaeleigh that night and after hearing it roll in and pound furiously against the house I became increasingly worried. It just seemed different than other storms. Mike checked his phone and exclaimed in surprise "There's a tornado warning". Just as he'd finished those words we heard the sirens sounding. I grabed the girls and Mike grabed Braden and we hightailed it to the basement for cover. Thankfully nothing serious happened, just alot of wind and a couple of bangs.

My parents we're the luckiest of all though because it came right over their house. They have a weather radio but were confused because it didn't say there was a warning so they were experiencing a tornado without realizing it. Damage was all around them but they were fine which is truly a blessing as they don't have the safety of a basement to go to.
Phew... Thanks Heavenly Father!

Alvin and the chipmonks

I'm pretty sure that everyone knows about these little fellas so a synopsis isn't needed.

I liked it, it's cute, they're talent has grown since the early days ;)

A good story for the kids, old and young.

Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium

The eccentric owner of a magical toy store, Dustin Hoffman (Hook, Finding Neverland) surprises the shop's manager, Natalie Portman (Star Wars, The Other Boleyn Girl) by turning over ownership to her. Jason Bateman (The Kingdom, Juno) stars as the detail-oriented accountant assigned the task of assessing the establishment's monetary value.

I found this movie enchanting with good life lessons. We watched this one a couple of times. Tons of fun for the kids.

Nim's Island

A young girl, Abigail Breslin (Santa Clause 3, Air Buddies) living on a tropical island with her scientist father, Gerard Butler (Phantom of the Opera, 300) is left to fend for herself after her dad's boat leaves him stranded far away. The resourceful youngster soon begins exchanging e-mails with the author of a book she has been reading, Jodie Foster ( Flight Plan, the Brave One).

It had a slow start but turned out to be really good. Jodie Foster was brilliant in this one as she frequently is in her roles. The kids were kept interested once the action started. An emotional ending worth the wait.

Ratatouille - Bluray

A rat named Remy dreams of becoming a great chef despite his family's wishes and the obvious problem of being a rat in a decidedly rodent-phobic profession. When fate places Remy in the city of Paris, he finds himself ideally situated beneath a restaurant made famous by his culinary hero, Auguste Gusteau. Despite the apparent dangers of being an unwanted visitor in the kitchen at one of Paris' most exclusive restaurants, Remy forms an unlikely partnership with Linguini, the garbage boy.

This is a winner! I put off watching this movie because I thought the story was a bit ridiculous and I was pleasantly surprised. Blu-ray made it great but the movie in itself was quite cleverly done. The kids and I watched it repeatedly before returning it to Blockbuster.

Definately a hit in my home!
